MEDRiNG will start a pilot project for MaaS in Indonesia

MEDRiNG, a part of MRT – the leading Japanese medical corporation, has recently launched a pilot of smart home healthcare project, utilizing medical MaaS for the elderly in Indonesia. This project is supported by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry as a part of Healthcare Industry International Development Promotion project (executive organization: Medical Excellence JAPAN). Professor Sumito Ogawa, a leading expert in geriatrics at the University of Tokyo, will supervise this project.

Background

Many ASEAN countries are in the midst of a demographic dividend period with a large labor force, driving economic growth. While the demand for medical care is expected to increase significantly, medical infrastructure remains incomplete. In order to fill this gap, governments around the world are working to improve legislation and digitalize healthcare.

Indonesia has the lowest number of doctors per 10,000 people among ASEAN countries (4.7 doctors/10,000 people) and large regional disparities. Under these circumstances, hospitals and companies have emerged to provide home healthcare services for the elderly, primarily home nursing care.

Meanwhile, SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, launched a satellite communication service called “Starlink” in Indonesia in May 2024 and the Indonesian government has announced the use of Starlink in public medical facilities. This facilitates the operation of medical MaaS based on internet communications in Indonesia.

Based on the above situation, MEDRiNG has decided to develop “Smart Home Healthcare” in Indonesia, utilizing medical MaaS to provide home healthcare services.

Overview

Medical MaaS vehicle will be integrated with Starlink. Nurses and other medical professionals will board the vehicle, and in principle, doctors will provide remote guidance and diagnosis. Home healthcare facilities will be owned and operated by Japanese or local healthcare institutions and will be newly opened or acquired through M&A. MEDRING is responsible for operating medical MaaS and other related services.

MEDRiNG has been developing MEDi, a cloud-based electronic medical record software for clinics in Vietnam and Indonesia in order to expand appropriate data-based medical care in ASEAN. MEDi software not only manages clinics but also supports the management of home healthcare operations.

With experience in developing medical personnel platforms, conducting home healthcare operations and building up know-how in vehicle operation  in Japan, MRT is committed to supporting MEDRiNG to recruit high-quality medical professionals who will be engaged in medical MaaS operations. On September 4, 2024, MRT entered into a capital and business alliance with Docquity, a leading platform for healthcare professionals in ASEAN. This agreement allows MRT to exclusively provide personnel recruitment services, including medical staffing services for 400,000 medical professionals of Docquity. With a large network of doctors and medical institutions in Japan, MRT also seeks owners of the local facilities, contributing to building a smart healthcare system.

In addition, Wakasa Clinic Group, with experience operating 14 home health care facilities in Japan, will support MEDRiNG’s operational management and attract other Japanese-affiliated home health care clinics to the business.

Sugity Creatives will be responsible for Sugity Creatives is responsible for the creation, provision and maintenance of medical MaaS vehicles.

Business development

This project will begin in August 2024 and be completed by early 2025 in order to build operational know-how, including optimal vehicle operation. At the same time, the company will conduct a survey to determine the appropriate location, price and plan to open the first facility by the end of 2025.

Future prospects

The combination of MRT’s medical personnel platform and MEDRiNG’s clinic management system will develop a comprehensive healthcare ecosystem, while contributing to improving the quality of medical services in ASEAN countries.
